Setting up, managing, and using SmartThings to automate and control your smart devices at home.
Get Started with SmartThings
Start your smart home experience with SmartThings by connecting to a Wi-Fi network and signing in to your Samsung account. SmartThings supports a wide range of smart devices, including TVs, appliances, and light bulbs.
Ensure you're connected to Wi-Fi and signed into Samsung.
Check device compatibility to see if your devices are supported.
Add Your Devices
Adding a device like a Hub or Camera to you SmartThings app is simple, and it’s the first step to building your smart home.
1. Turn on the device, open the SmartThings app.
2. When the connection pop-up appears, tap 'Add now'.
3. Alternatively, you can scan the device’s QR code or search nearby to connect by tapping on '➕'.
4. If your device is ready to be added, you can scan for nearby devices to connect it.
5. You can also select a brand on the Add device screen to locate your device.
Control Your Devices
Once your devices are connected, you’re ready to manage your devices right from the app.
1. Tap the main action button to control basic functions such as turning off or on.
2. For more options, tap the device card (e.g., adjust the temperature or brightness).
3. View all devices under 'All devices' (next to the magnifier icon '🔎') in the Devices tab. It is the first option on this row.
Manage Rooms
Organize your devices by assigning them to specific rooms, making it easy to find and control them.
1. In the Devices tab, tap the three-dot (more options button) on the top right, then tap the 'Manage rooms' , and finally tap '➕' (also on the top right) to add a room like 'Kitchen' or 'Bedroom'.
2. In the same tab (Devices tab), switch rooms by swiping, and view devices assigned to each room.
3. Use the same three-dot menu (more options) to 'Move devices' between rooms.
Create Routines
Routines help automate multiple devices at once based on specific conditions or schedules. This means, for example, that if you want your heater to turn on when it is cold or turn off when it is a moderate temperature, it will be done automatically.
1. Go to the Routines tab and tap the '➕' button (on the top right) to create a new routine.
2. Then after it opens the 'Create routine' page, tap the '➕' button (right under the 'If' ) to add conditions that will trigger the routine
3. Under 'If' , Add conditions like time of day or device status (If something happens or certain condition present).
4. Under 'Then', add whatever reaction or control you want to happen after the 'If' condition occurs.
5. Choose actions the routine will perform, and
tap on 'Save'.
5. Then, give it a name and icon, and tap on 'Save' again.
Share Control of Devices
Allow others (i.e. family members) to control your smart devices by inviting them to your location.
1. On the top left, tap on locations name (which might have locations like 'My home' for example) and tap on '⚙️ Manage locations' .
2. Select the location (i.e. My Office, My Home) that you want to share.
3. On the bottom of the page, tap on '➕ Invite member' and then, enter their email or use a QR code.
4. For inviting by email, type the email address of the person you want to invite, and tap on 'Send'.
5. For inviting using QR code, ask the person to scan the QR code.
6. Once they accept, they’ll be able to control all devices in that location.
SmartThings Home Monitor
Monitor your home’s security with various sensors and get alerts for emergencies. Avoid property damages by overseeing sensitive areas.
1. Use sensors like multipurpose, open/close, and motion sensors to detect activity.
2. Get notifications for smoke, carbon monoxide, and water leaks.
3. Receive alerts when sensors detect movement or hazards.
Record with SmartThings Cam
Use your SmartThings Cam to automatically record events based on conditions like motion or sound.
1. Using SmartThings Cam and routines, you can configure your cameras to start recording whenever they detect motion, sound, or a person.
2. For example, you can use person detection to ensure the camera turns on when your child gets home from school.
3. You can also set your camera to automatically record when:
* Smoke is detected
* A gas leak is detected
* An intrusion is detected
4. You can set your camera to automatically record based on:
* The time of day
* The day of the week
* The status of other devices and detectors, such as when a door opens or the TV is turned on
5. You can record your home in real time, focusing only on the areas that matter to you.
6. Once you've registered your SmartThings Cam, you can view your video clips in SmartThings Video.
Using Matter Devices
Add Matter-compatible devices for broader smart home compatibility across multiple platforms.
1. Check for the Matter logo on your device to confirm compatibility.
2. Turn on the device, when the device connection pop-up appears, tap "Add now" in the app, and scan the QR code if available.
3. You can also manually enter the Matter code.
4. Share your added Matter devices with other smart home apps like Google Home.
Fix Problems with Offline Devices
Diagnose and fix issues when devices show up as offline.
1. Go to 'Offline diagnostics' in the SmartThings menu and select the offline device.
2. Check the top of the device details screen for diagnostic suggestions when online.
3. Follow reconnecting tips based on the diagnostics results.
Hub Replacement
Easily replace an outdated or broken hub without losing connections to your devices.
1. In the Devices tab, select the card for the old hub, tap 'More' and choose 'Replace hub'.
2. Add a new hub that meets specific requirements (e.g., no connected devices, online status).
3. Select devices to reconnect and confirm.
4. The original hub will reset and be removed from SmartThings after replacement.
