Z-Wave lighting compatibility

Lighting control is amongst the most in-demand of Z-Wave‘s features. As there are so many types of lights available to buy, however, it’s important to select the right Z-Wave controller. Below we take you through the steps to ensuring compatibility between your Z-Wave network and your home’s or office’s lighting.

Relevant products.

There are two categories of Aeotec Z-Wave controllers specifically designed to control lights:

  1. Z-Wave plug-in controllers; specifically the Smart Energy Illuminator and the Smart Dimmer (2nd Edition). Lighting control is also compatible with the Smart Energy Switch and the Smart Switch (2nd Edition).
  2. Z-Wave in-wall controllers; specifically the Micro Smart Dimmer (2nd Edition). Lighting control is also compatible with the Micro Smart Switch (2nd Edition).

Compatibility.

With fluorescent lights.

For Z-Wave control of fluorescent lights with ballasts the right products to use are Aeotec’s ‘Switch’ products. These include the in-wall Micro Smart Switch (2nd Edition), and the plug-in Smart Energy Switch and Smart Switch (2nd Edition).

The switching products will work with fluorescent lights, as well as large appliances, that draw up to a 5 amp current. Such devices specifically have a dash current. Where the load is ohmic the switches are compatible up to 10 amps.

With tungsten lights.

For Z-Wave control of tungsten lights the right products to use are Aeotec’s lighting specific products. These include the in-wall Micro Smart Dimmer (2nd Edition) and Micro Dimmer (2nd Edition), along with the plug-in Smart Energy Illuminator and Smart Dimmer (2nd Edition).

With halogen lights.

For Z-Wave control of halogen lights the right products to use are Aeotec’s lighting specific products. These include the in-wall Micro Smart Dimmer (2nd Edition) and Micro Dimmer (2nd Edition), along with the plug-in Smart Energy Illuminator and Smart Dimmer (2nd Edition).

With sodium lights.

For Z-Wave control of sodium lights the right products to use are Aeotec’s lighting specific products. These include the in-wall Micro Smart Dimmer (2nd Edition) and Micro Dimmer (2nd Edition), along with the plug-in Smart Energy Illuminator and Smart Dimmer (2nd Edition).

With LED lights.

For the control of LED lights with a trailing edge, Z-Wave dimming products are not suitable.
